Preview MCR's New Music Video!

Exciting news from MTV today came and brought me this preview My Chemical Romance's "Desolation Row" video. Check it out!!!

Oh, MTV, you would cover this over a month after I. The article (linked at the beginning of blog) contains a quote from MCR's Gerard Way where he says that the song plays a bigger part in the Watchmen film than I had previously thought. Whatever it is, it's toward the end, and it gave Gerard chills. I have an idea of what it may be, having read the graphic novel, but we shall see.

As for this video, well let's just say that tiny clip gave me the shakes to see the full version, which, according to My Chem's website, will be available for download from iTunes tomorrow!! Seeing such a raw and aggressive video from the band really brings back the vibes of the band's early history. And that gives me chills.

Warped Wednesday

So, I'm sitting here, miserable because the third issue of Dallas came out today and, due to Athens's SUCKING, it is not in my hands. I think to myself, "I have an entire icy day free of classes and am about to cry. What could cheer me up?"

Duh. Warped Tour.

I had planned on writing my Warped Tour blog earlier than this, pushed it away from my focuses, then was reminded by my blog-follower, Sarah, who posted a blog about a Warped Tour documentary.

-----
There's nothing in the world quite like Warped tour, where you are likely to run into any variation of being available all while burning in the sun and watching, on your choice of several stages, the most diverse concert line-up out there. Warped tour is less of a show than an experience, a hot and sticky experience that takes place on the burning asphalt of a parking lot in the dead of summer. The mere smell of Warped Tour is unlike anything else in the world. There's no other way to describe it than the smell of "hot" completely epitomized, especially when one is standing amid the crowd. For some, Warped Tour becomes a survival experience, where one must come equipped with gear to get through it, ie. the time I stood at the front of a Warped Tour crowd for 10 straight hours to see My Chemical Romance front row and nearly died.

Warped Tour, like Christmas, is sort of a regular tradition for many like myself, and I was surprised to find out some of the differences my favorite annual tour will have this year. For instance, in the past I have had to "rough it" to simply survive a day at WT, traipsing back and forth between two main-stages and several smaller ones (well, not Warped '05 where I stayed at one stage the entire time), but this year- there will be only one main stage and it will be actually placed in the comfort of an ampitheatre. What fun is that?! Why, back in my day, Sonny-Boy, you had to stand in the sun, your flesh peeling off and die to see bands on the main stage, but this year kids get the luxury of sitting in the shade. Two of those words just don't fit with the Warped I know: "sitting" and "shade." It's warped. You're supposed to be in the middle of a parking lot or in some dirt pit somewhere, not somewhere where a stage is actually meant to be. As far as I know, all the smaller stages will remain in the desert-like conditions to which they are accustomed, but Warped Tour will be down one crucial stage this year, the traditional second main stage. I'm excited to see what kind of difference this new set-up will make, however, and especially excited about this line-up:

3OH!3
A Day to Remember
A Skylit Drive
Alexisonfire
Anti-Flag
Attack Attack
Bad Religion
Bayside
Big D and the Kids Table

Black Tide
Bouncing Souls

Dance Gavin Dance
Dear and the Headlights
Dirty Heads
Escape the Fate

The Architects
The Ataris
The Devil Wears Prada
The Maine
The White Tie Affair
There For Tomorrow
Therefore I Am

I have made bold the ones for which I am most excited. Which Warped '09 bands are you most excited to see? I can only hope that when I go to copy down the set times of the bands from the huge, inflatable Warped schedule that none are playing at the same time.

It is my absolute dream to some day follow this tour and write for it, to highlight and document everything amazing that goes on during the show and behind the scenes, from set up to the post-show BBQ. So, Kevin Lyman, if you ever find yourself reading this, I now fall to my knees before you, hands clasped and beg of you to let me cover the tour. I'm thoroughly willing sweat and bleed through it.

That's not an overstatement.

So, in honor of this year's amazing Warped Tour, I decided to share my favorite Warped memory.

Warped Tour 2005

This was my first Warped and the third time I had seen MCR live as well as the first time I met Gerard and Mikey. After their set, I was lifted from the crowd by a security guard who drug me under the stage where my favorite band was standing. I fell over an equipment-loading ramp and got a piece of metal from the drummer of MCR's kit stuck in my knee. The band, of course, saw all of it. How embarrassing! Mikey and Gerard must have felt bad, though, for; they came to talk to me in the first aide tent.

Me with Gerard Way, singer of MCR (above) and with Mikey Way, bassist of MCR (right).

So now, all of you, go forth and get Warped!

My Chemical Romance Interview on XFM

Yesterday, British radio station, XFM, premiered MCR's "Desolation Row," and followed today with a wonderful interview with My Chem's lead-guitarist, Ray Toro.

The guitarist commented on his watching VH1's "Confessions of a Teen Idol" and expressed concern that the band, while on break, would become like the miserable subjects of that show. So, does this mean he will be compelled to stop sitting around and watching TV to get busy with the band? Toro said that the band had begun "early discussions" and did some "preliminary writing" recently. He says that the band are focused on "having a good time" at this point, but they will be getting together in February to begin seriously plotting the next album.

He also had this to say to fans: "Thanks to them for continuing to listen, and we really appreciate that. I know we've been off for a while and we're definitely going to come back soon. I mean, we can't wait. As much as they miss us and want to hear what we're doing, we can't wait to see them and can't wait to play for them."

Lyrics of the Week: Desolation Row

In honor of Bob Dylan's epic song that was covered by MCR for the end-credits of Watchmen, this week's lyrics definitely had to be "Desolation Row". The MCR version of this song is far from the original, and very scaled down with less than half of these original lyrics, but these are great words, so -for those of you who only know the MCR version of this song- take a look at some of the great lyrics that were left out.

Desolation Row
Bob Dylan

They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row

Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You Belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says," You're in the wrong place, my friend
You better leave"
And the only sound that's left
After the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up
On Desolation Row

Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing
He's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight
On Desolation Row

Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row

Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
He looked so immaculately frightful
As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
And reciting the alphabet
Now you would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
Inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients
They're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
"Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on penny whistles
You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
From Desolation Row

Across the street they've nailed the curtains
They're getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They're spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls
"Get Outa Here If You Don't Know
Casanova is just being punished for going
To Desolation Row"

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row

Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody's shouting
"Which Side Are You On?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row

Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the door knob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Don't send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them
From Desolation Row

"XO"- LeATHERMOUTH

Most of you who have any sort of attraction to my blog, will already know that Leathermouth is My Chemical Romance rhythm guitarist, Frank Iero's, side project. There's enough back-story to the release of this CD that I feel I need to digress in time to best describe it.

A long-ass time ago, we My Chem fans started getting wind of Leathermouth: this band shrouded in mystery, always turning their backs in photographs or wearing masks. What were these guys hiding from the public? We soon found that it was a secret weapon in a 5'4" package about to be unleashed upon the world-- Frank Iero needed somewhere to let shit out, and thus Leathermouth lived.

Demos of Leathermouth songs started cropping up on purevolume and random seedy websites, where they were abruptly downloaded at first by those who were interested in Frank Iero's musical pursuit and members of the Skeleton Crew family, then by others in the hardcore scene who caught on and realized something along the lines of: "That emo dude from that shitty band is legit fucking good!"

So, the demos were devoured, and the kids who needed somewhere to vent their piss and vinegar gained another favorite band. There were roughly four relatively poor recording quality demos of the songs, then titled:
Fifth Period| Sunsets are For Muggers| Body Snatchers Forever (What's a Pulse Got To Do With It?)| and Murder Was the Case They Gave Me
That short list was enough for the band to tour on and to watch with amusement as young girls in the audience screamed back lyrics about killing girls, and shouting such memorable lines as: "Its search and destroy, you fucking whore."

Eventually, the band got noticed enough to be signed by Epitaph, and from there "XO" was recorded for my listening and reviewing pleasure.

XO
LeATHERMOUTH
Epitaph Records

Release date: January 27th, 2009

Sounds like: The Oval Portrait, United Nations
Doesn't sound like: My Chemical Romance

Tracklisting:
1. 5th Period Massacre
2. Catch Me If You Can
3. This Song Is About Being Attacked By Monsters
4. I Am Going To Kill The President Of The United States Of America
5. Murder Was The Case That They Gave Me
6. Sunsets Are For Muggings
7. My Lovenote Has Gone Flat
8. Your Friends Are Full Of Shit
9. Bodysnatchers 4 Ever
10. Leviathan

As mentioned in my back-story, this album is a no-joke, violent, angry ride. For those of you who like melody and nice things like kittens this probably isn't quite your cup of tea. As for those of you, however, who have ever felt like simply setting the world ablaze, this album could very well be your new voice.

Even with recording quality far higher than that of the original demos, this album is still is able to maintain its suited roughness, giving it even more of an edge than it already has. With relentless drums in company of pounding and squealing guitars, this album is like a static-ridden ADD trip for one's ears, and definitely an interesting listen. The screams on this album are some of the most intelligible I have heard in a long time, for those of you who are big into lyrics. The lyrical content however may not be the pretty flowery poetry you desire.

A highlight of the album is the vocal-rhythm-driven "This Song is About Being Attacked By Monsters" describing what appears to be a zombie apocalypse that ends with the singer's piercing, desperate screams as the creatures devour him, containing such awesome lines as: We need a plan, get a plan, need a plan.../ WE NEED A DOCTOR, A FUCKING DOCTOR!/Just get your gun, get your gun... you better run! It's a perfect song for any horror fan, and any fan of good music for that matter.
Though "...Monsters" was my favorite song of the album, I found myself listening to each track over and over.

All songs blend perfectly into the next with building intensity through the entire album until it ends with a moaning singer in "Leviathan".

You can listen to the album streaming now on myspace then go buy it on the 27th and break some shit.

My Chemical Romance Ending Hiatus?

A text message arrived to me late last night:
---
Message From Twitter:

gerardway: Epic blog! Heading to a recording studio...
---

Now this could mean a couple things: Gerard is messing with the fans (see his Tweet about shaving his head and the chaos that surrounded it for example) or
he, as is by now historically predicted of him, has blabbed something he was not supposed to blab.

My money is going on the latter.

My Chemical Romance, after the Madison Square Garden stop of their 2008 US tour in May, went into hiatus mode, not giving any definite date for the end of their off-road hibernation. They just needed time to "live," as they said, which is more than understandable for a band that had spent nearly 4 years straight on the road. But, of course, the guys didn't stay away from their passions.

Frank Iero has been diligently working toward the release of his side-project, Leathermouth's, coming debut "XO" (January 27th, Epitaph Records) and touring with Reggie and the Full Effect. Ray Toro joined a Weezer cover band, Bob Bryar has been obsessively Twittering and judging drum-offs in Chicago. Mikey Way penned a comic for the DC Halloween special, and Gerard has been working on The Umbrella Academy and doing voice-overs for creepy Christmas videos.

As is also historically predicted of the band, they have begun working on their music in spite of this silly, little "hiatus" of theirs, ending it quickly. The individual members have been coming up with ideas on whatever side of the country they may be, and recently came together to shoot a video for "Desolation Row". There are now rumors that the band has begun pre-production on their next album, and -though the band has said nothing definite about it- many magazines and music websites have placed MCR in the "unknown release date" section of their Most Anticipated Albums of 2009 reports.

Now, with all that they have been doing, can we really say that MCR were ever really on a break? Sure they were, compared to their usual schedule. For instance, in 2005, I was able to see the band on tour at least once 8/12 months, and that's not an unusual thing for a fan of the band.

But is the break really done? It very well could be coming to a close. I forget the source and the exact quote, but I remember an interview Gerard did a long time ago where he said he doesn't know what to do when he's off tour and finds himself trying to get jobs at the local grocery store. Being a band has become too natural for these guys. I have a feeling this will all be sorted out soon, but in the meantime:

Pre-Order Watchmen Vinyl

Beautiful, isn't it?

That 12", my friends, is what I just pre-ordered from the My Chemical Romance online store for a mere $11.99 ($16.52 with shipping). That price is a true bargain for the following reasons:

°There will only be 3,000 copies of this special edition vinyl.
°It comes with artwork from the film.
°Epicosity factor = 4,000,000,000

The 12" picture disk has two sides and two tracks. Side A is My Chemical Romance's cover of "Desolation Row" while Side B contains the track "Prison Fight" another from the score of the movie. You honestly can't pass this one up, can you?

Pre-order Here!

If you don't want to pre-order, you can also wait until January 27th, when the vinyl will be released, but why would you do that when it's on sale now? Do as I say and as I do, readers.

Bands + Auctioning Epic Stuff on eBay = A Great Way to Support a Good Cause!

Often, bands like to give back, and a couple of my favorites are doing so this week by offering up sweet things on eBay. Please check out these auctions:

Rock Legends Autographed Guitar for Charity
This is a Fender guitar signed by members of Alkaline Trio, Rise Against, T.S.O.L, The Gaslight. Anthem, and many more. Proceeds go to Wheels for Humanity. The bid as of my posting time is only $305.00, which is very reasonable for the value of the item.

Umbrella Academy with Original Sketch by Gerard Way
A special edition hardback trade-issue of the first series of Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance's comic, The Umbrella Academy. It comes with an original sketch (NOT A REPRINT) of the comic's character Spaceboy. Very few people can say they own an original piece of Gerard Way's art, so this is something that is hard to pass up. The auction benefits a friend of the artist who has been diagnosed with cancer. The money will go toward making her home wheelchair accessible.
There are other auctions going toward this same cause with items from Mindless Self Indulgence. See them here.

Help someone out by making a bid, and get a chance to win some cool stuff while you're at it.

"I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" - MCR On Vinyl!

My Chemical Romance's former record label, Eyeball Records is set to release the band's debut album on vinyl February 3rd.

Like the recent vinyl for the band's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" (Warner-Reprise), this vinyl will be printed on what the website describes as "Fiery Red Vinyl," but a select amount will be issued in on white vinyl. You can check out product information by clicking here.

As for that "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" vinyl, go buy it now if you haven't already! I mean, RIGHT NOW! It comes with an MCR sticker, a stencil, and reprints of original, handwritten lyrics to "...Revenge" songs, which is my favorite part. Plus, it's on transparent, bright red vinyl, and looks really sweet when you play it. See:

You can still order the "...Revenge" vinyl from MCR's online store, just click here.

EXCLUSIVE Watchmen Update: More "Desolation Row"

"Gerard and the boys were very cool.
This was my first time meeting and
working with MCR. I had a blast!" -Joy

When Joy Villa of Los Angeles (pictured right with Gerard Way) posted a casting call notification she had received in mid-December on her Myspace blog, a few My Chemical Romance fans got a chance of their lifetimes! A video was being shot for a new My Chem video in support of the upcoming movie release of The Watchmen, and punk-rocker extras were needed!

"Two of my new friends came down from up north just to come to the video shoot," Villa, an aspiring model, actress, and singer said. The two friends to whom she is referring came all the way from Washington and Canada, showing just how dedicated MCR fans are, and I'm sure there were others who traveled even farther for the opportunity. Had I known about it, I would have drug myself from Ohio without hesitation.

The extras auditioning for the part were to dress in period-correct '80s punk garb, look the part, and convincingly be the part. Based on the '80s punk scene, this music video is surely going to be a riot! Literally.

"I'm in the mosh pit [quite heavily,] kicking ass with the rest of the stunt guys; MCR is playing their song, and it starts a riot," said Joy of her role in the video and of the general plot.

British music magazine, Kerrang! announced earlier this month that the single is set for release tomorrow (January 9th), but if you're worried that you wont be able to see the video, worry not, friends. Joy disclosed to me that the music video will be a DVD extra, and it is to be run on MTV, and we all know it will find its way to the internet.

As soon as I can get my hands on the video, it will be posted here.

What I Listened to in 2008

I have mentioned Last.Fm previously in my blog, and I'm about to mention it again, and show you one of the awesome things it can do.

It is human nature to document our lives, I learned last week in Visual Communication class, and last.fm is the perfect way to document one's musical life. On the first day of 2009, I did a screen capture of my last 12 months of listening as documented by last.fm, and it gave me an overview of what kind of person I was musically in 2008.

It's a little blurry, so I'll translate it for you: I listened to a LOT of My Chemical Romance, about half as much Alkaline Trio, got really into Billy Talent and Drive-By after having seen them live, and kept it old-school quite a bit. XX Teens, Amanda Palmer, and Anthony Green had the only new releases that I liked. 2008, I feel, was a sad year for music, so I'm looking forward to 2009 immensely.

EDIT: That thing that appears to say "Wall Skye" is actually "Matt Skiba"-- but if there were a band called "Wall Skye," I would listen for sure.

Watchmen Update: "Desolation Row"!

Source: Kerrang!

My Chemical Romance will release their cover of the Bob Dylan classic, Desolation Row' on February 9 through Warner Bros.

The song is taken from the soundtrack to the upcoming big screen adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' cult comic book series The Watchmen.

The track will be released as a digital download and as a limited edition 12" vinyl. The 12" will be limited to just 3,000 copies and will be backed with an extract from the film's score.

In related news, the full film soundtrack will be released in the UK on February 23 while the with the film itself will follow on March 6.

You lucky English, you. I will keep an eye out for definite US news on the single. Brits tend to get everything a day earlier than us.

Taking Back Sunday and Envy On The Coast [Part Three] (Pictures)

Finally, my internet is fast enough to give thought to posting pictures. So, here are a few from the Taking Back Sunday show on December 12th in Louisville, KY.

Read Part One of my TBS/EOTC blogs here
Read Part Two of my TBS/EOTC blogs here

I apologize for the quality of these pictures, as; they were taken old-school style with a Kodak disposable camera. Ha-ha! I'm very old school, as you know.

Adam appearing to be falling.

Adam doing the old sing-and-dance while Fazzi does the old sing-and-guitar. My scanner cut off the poor guy's head.

Adam hiding his face.

The Matts- Fazzi and Rubano

Eddie offering the dehydrated mass in front of him water.

A bad-quality picture of Adam that I felt I needed to upload, because he's looking at my camera.

Adam aaaaannnddd...

Adam again.

Those are only a few of the pictures that I took, but most were far too awful to put up here. The venue's lights were behind the band-- no spotlights, so the lighting was pretty unfortunate for camera-work.

Thanks for checking out the pictures. I hope you have enjoyed my TBS tour blogs.

Watchmen Update [New My Chemical Romance Video]!

As you guys know from my expressing it in previous blogs, I am very excited for The Watchmen movie, but I am also almost equally excited for the soundtrack. But, first thing is first: the movie.

Many people have been asking about its release date. Despite court controversy between WB and Fox (read), WB still intends to release the movie on the originally scheduled date of March 6th. Whether this will remain so, we have yet to see, but I want to talk about tunes, as always.

The soundtrack for The Watchmen movie is scheduled for release on February 24th, and will feature My Chemical Romance's cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row". Those of you who have read the graphic novel will know that this song is quoted at the end of a chapter. My Chem were asked to record the song for the film's closing credits. So, you know I'll be the one in the theatre lingering behind for the credits.

A couple weeks ago, the band recorded a video for the song. Those around the set in L.A. reported having seen angry extras fleeing the building in which the video was mainly shot. Because of Watchmen director Zack Snyder's directing the music video, confusion spread as to whether the new My Chem video was actually extra shooting for the movie.

I can't wait for the video nor for the soundtrack! This is all so very exciting, especially to us MCR fans. I was fortunate enough to see the band play their Dylan cover at one of the shows I went to on their 2008 tour. On the second night of their playing in Chicago, they treated us to a little "Desolation Row". I couldn't find any really good videos from that show, but I found this clip of the song from their Vegas stop in March (which I almost went to, but ended up having extreme plan-changes. Grrr).

Keep watching for Watchmen updates. As soon as I can find a track-listing for the soundtrack, it will be here.

Happy [Jet Black] New Year!

Happy new year, everyone! I feel it's only appropriate that I post lyrics from Thursday's "Jet Black New Year" on this special occasion.

Ten seconds left until midnight
nine chances to drown ourselves in black hair dye
eight faces turned away from the shock
seven windows and
six of them were locked
five stories falling
4ever and ever
three cheers to the mirror
now there are two of us
can we have one last dance?

Be sure to check out Thursday on this year's Taste of Chaos tour! They never disappoint live.
