Lyrics of the Week: "Demons Away"

Some of you may have noticed that I neglected my lyric segment last week, and my lyric choice today will provide some explanation for that.

Every once in a while, I go through phases where I hit an emotional bottom, and I have to struggle to bring myself back to some sort of relative surface. This last struggle I had lasted for almost a month, and I could hardly bring myself to move, let alone share lyrics, but I'm back, and the lyrics I am providing this week are from one of the songs that helped me through.

Written by Matt Skiba for the compilation "Protect: A Benefit for the National Association to Protect Children", which features 26 songs by various punk artists; such as, NOFX, Against Me!, and The Ergs, "Demons Away" is the first track and a very touching one.

The song shows a sympathy for anxiety that many face, and makes a point to show that one is not alone in the horrors, sadness, and panic we must often face in our lives.

I've decided to embed audio, because this song is even more touching heard than read.

Demons Away
Matt Skiba

I know you're alone
In the dark, all alone
Underneath the covers
Hiding from the demons
That came for your soul.

They might be over in the closet
They might be underneath your bed
They might be just outside your window, baby
Or maybe just inside your head.

But if you let me stay over
I'll try to keep you safe
I've got an army of skeletons
To chase your demons away.

I know that you're scared
You're in the dark, so scared
Simply terrified, no one'll hear you screaming
If they could would they care?

There's only one way to find out
I pray that day never comes
For that would mean the ending of you, baby
The end of you, my love.

But if you let me stay over
I'll try to keep you safe
I've got an army of skeletons
To chase your demons away.

And baby, I can tell you've been crying
Oh baby, I know you've been lying to me
Yes indeed.
Oh baby, I can tell you don't sleep no more
Oh baby, believe me I've been there before.

If you let me stay over
I'll try to keep you safe
I've got an army of skeletons
To chase your demons away.

PS: I fully plan on getting some lyrics from this song tattoo'd on my body at some point. I love it that much.

Thank you for reminding me of this one, I have not given it a listen in quite some time. The song still gives me chills, and the lyrics once again provide me safety. I needed to hear this, so - once again - thank you for the reminder of this beautiful song.

I feel a lot better now.
